.Eu Domains & Brexit: What you need to know

With Brexit closely on the horizon, it’s time to consider what could happen to your website if it’s registered under an .eu domain. Currently in the UK, there are over 300,000 domains that risk being cancelled. Is your website one of them? Not to worry! There are alternative options you can put in place before the big day arrives! Here’s what you need to know…

What is Brexit?

British withdrawal from the European Union

When is it going to happen?

Friday 29thMarch 2019

How will this affect your website?

If your company has a residency within a country in the EU or an EU postal address, then you can still use the domain. However, to continue doing so you will need to update the admin details on the .eu domain name record.

On the other hand, if your company only has a presence in the UK, you will not be able to use your website with an .eu domain. UK businesses will no longer have the right to own, renew or register .eu domain names. EURid (European Registry for Internet Domains), will be withdrawing all .eu domain names registered to UK addresses on one of two dates:

  • 30 March 2019 if the UK exits the EU with no deal
  • 1 January 2021 if the UK exits the EU with a deal

Although nobody yet knows for sure exactly what is going to happen with the deal/no deal, it is always best to take the necessary precautions early to avoid any disruption within your website and the risk of not being able to use it, which could have an impact on your business.

What are your options?

The best thing to do to ensure you can still use your website after 29thMarch is to migrate your website to a generic domain such as .com/.org /.net.
